Manawatu Bowls News – Sept 18

Thanks to Tony Jensen, for providing us with the latest news from around Manawatu…

“The season is underway with most Clubs either already open or doing so next weekend.

The Centre Programme will not be long in commencing with the women’s Wimsett Cup being played on Monday 17 October at Shannon. That event will be quickly followed by the National Mixed 2/4/2 Pairs at Northern from 22-24 October 2011 which is Labour weekend. A new sponsor has been secured for the event in Julia Wallace Retirement Village so players will be competing for prizemoney as well as a National event.

The following two weekend will see the National club triples event played on 29/30 October and the pairs discipline for the same event on 5/6 November so half the National Club events will be over by the first week in November. Venues for these two tournaments are yet to be confirmed but it is hoped they will be spread between Terrace End and Palmerston North.

An early representative fixture will be on 4 November in the form of the women’s 5 year and under WKWM (Wellington, Kapiti, Wairarapa, Manawatu) fixture which our Centre will host. Whereas Eric Watson is sole selector for men’s bowls the women have four different individuals involved. Lyn Elphick will select 5 year and under and Masters, Noeline Elston 10 year and under and Viv Lozell will look after the seniors assisted by Shirley Newman.

• Who is playing where is always an early season question but one addition to Manawatu ranks is the wonderfully performed Wellington bowler Mark Noble who is apparently playing for Northern. His wife Janine who is a fine bowler in her own right will arrive later in the season.

• A group from the Greenkeeper’s Association visited Pahiatua last week to provide some advice and direction. With a new greenkeeper of their own the Club has be re-invigorated and are expecting a top season.

• Palmerston North’s Kath Brosnahan was honoured with life membership of the Club at their annual meeting. Among the roles Kath has undertaken in the Club are president, club captain, member of executive, games committee member, selector and welfare officer so she has genuinely given of herself. While she no longer bowls she is as active as ever as a member of the executive and assisting with twilight competitions, golden oldies and the like.

• Clubs won’t have their centre books yet so men should note Norther have a pairs tournament next Sunday 25 September.

Good bowling and don’t forget to email me your club’s news at tony.jensen@aon.co.nz”
