Leading Tauranga South bowler Peter Clark has finally won the Palmerston North Bowling Club’s popular Golden Oldies tournament on his fifth attempt.
Clark – with his lineup of Maurice Hickey (three), Robert Frelan (two) and Malcolm Kidd (lead) – headed off 79 other teams in the Julia Wallace Retirement Home sponsored tournament that was being held for the 28th time on the Palmerston North and Terrace End greens.
Final placings hinged on the last round game between Clark and last year’s champions, Ian Mahoney (Levin), but Clark prevailed by four and the title went to Tauranga for the first time.
Local composite teams filled out the next three placings – with Brian Schiscka (Johnston Park) skipping Rex Easton (PN), Peter Gosley (Terrace End) and Colin Lozell (Northern) into second place; Clark Norris and John Chambers (Takaro) and Ken Mott and Shorty Kale (Johnston Park) finishing third, and Phil Skoglund (Northern), Lawrie Gordon (Takaro) and Ron Henn and Ross Naylor (PN) in fourth.
Wanganui East’s Robbie Robertson, and his team of Peter Head, Cy Evans and Peter Raymond, retained the B section title, while other sectional winners were George Withey, Gary Read, George Seattor and Bill Illsley (Dannevirke); John Randle, Warwick Allen, Ken Souto and Michael Corrigan (Heretaunga), and Stan Hiroti, Ted Tamou, Ori Haddon and Alby Balsley (Castlecliff).
PNBC President Dave Free was delighted that the tournament had retained its appeal and welcomed the support of major sponsor, Julia Wallace Retirement Village, as well as the Taranaki Savings Bank.
“Sponsorship is so vital to the welfare of any club and the PNBC is really appreciative of the sponsors’ input. This is the club’s marquee tournament and it seems appropriate that Julia Wallace is on board for this event,” said Dave.
